Canon EOS 70D is something fresh in the Canon lineup, something that was long needed in their semi-professional category. With both Nikon and Sony constantly putting out newer and better products, they simply can’t afford to stay behind!
Sensor – Quality
Maximum Resolution: 5,472 x 3,648
Sensor Type: APS-C (all EF and EF-S lenses will fit on it)
As usual for the semi-professional EOS models, the 70D features an APS-C sensor with 1.6x crop factor. What’s exciting is that it comes with 20.2 megapixels, meaning Canon has finally moved on from their old 18 megapixel sensor. While there wasn’t anything wrong with it, it just got to a point where it was obvious that every new announcement would show the very same sensor with a few minor improvements.
On the other hand, megapixels aren’t really the only important about such expensive cameras. Once you actually look at all the things Canon upgraded, the price will suddenly look even much more affordable! 20 megapixels not only allow you to print huge (bigger than most photographers do), it also allows you to crop a lot of your photographs to get even closer to the subject, without losing much/any quality. That’s where extra pixels are useful, whereas for small printing you definitely don’t need to worry about numbers.
Simply put, the Canon EOS 70D was made to deliver great quality, it’s up to you how much you are willing to learn about DSLRs and photography.
Body & Design
The back looks pretty similar to the 60D; those of you who are upgrading will have absolutely no trouble getting adjusted to the button layout and the materials used. For those who this will be their first “serious” camera, reading the manual really won’t hurt. Fortunately, the buttons are pretty self-explanatory and will show you all you need to know once you click them each. For a detailed explanation on average DSLR button layout, check out our tutorial.
- Weight (Body Only): 675g / 23.8 oz
- LCD Size: 3.0″- 1,040,000 dots – Articulating – Touchscreen available
- Viewfinder Coverage: 98%
- Memory: SDHC Card Slot
If you ask me that’s pretty darn light, especially when you consider what all is hiding under that body. As usual with DSLR cameras, they do not fit into pockets and it’s something you have to accept.
It also features a 3 inch articulating LCD screen that will come handy when recording videos. What really sets the 70D apart from competition though, is the new Dual Pixel AF technology! Auto focusing in video is now much more faster and accurate and I can easily say it’s the best out there for now. If you are looking to record amateur or professional videos, this is all you need to start with.
There are quite a few things that are worth pointing out as “features” in the EOS 70D.
- Dual Pixel AF CMOS Technology – Every pixel is split into two photo-diodes for improved movie mode focusing
- 19 AF Point System – Exclusive to the 7D, this amazing all cross-type 19 AF system is now also a part of the 70D!
- LCD Screen – As expected it features an articulating screen and an option to turn on touch screen capabilities.
I can easily say that the what Canon has done with the 70D is amazing, it’s obvious they felt the need to be a little bit more competitive towards Nikon. Have they done the job right? Absolutely! I recommend Amazon for any photography purchase, they are the most reliable and also have a ton of products to choose from.
